FOOTBALL: Town look to extend unbeaten run

Tiverton Town’s trip to Mangotsfield was called off at 10am on Saturday.

The Cossham Street pitch was declared unplayable due to the freezing conditions in Bristol, continuing the Ladysmead outfit's enforced winter break.

But they did manage to organise a friendly on Wednesday at home to a strong Torquay United side which ended 1-1 (match report below) to extend their unbeaten run to 11 games, a feat not seen since their maiden season in the Southern League. Then they embarked on a 17-match blitz on February 8, 2000, which lasted until defeat at Cinderford on April 22 during which time they won 15 times and drew twice, a feat unlikely to be emulated for many a year.

On Saturday they travel to Willand Rovers for another friendly, kick-off 3pm.

Cullompton Rangers followed up their excellent win at Saltash to come away with the spoils in their friendly at Elmore on Wednesday, James Blake scoring the only goal of the game.

Tiverton Town U18s' first Somerset Floodlight League game since November saw their fine form continue with a battling performance at Mangotsfield United on Wednesday to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight games. James Skinner's 47th minute goal separated the sides to prevent their hosts from returning to the top of the table.

Willand Rovers missed the opportunity to go top of the Western League when they were beaten at home 1-2 by Wells City, their third Silver Street loss on the trot.

The visitors had taken a first half lead through Jamie Howson which Jake Brown doubled mid-way through the second period before Perry Carpenter's late consolation goal.

They need to shrug off the disappointment of being bundled out of the Vase if they are going keep their championship hopes alive as they are now two points off the summit having played a game more than leaders Bitton.

Reflecting on Cullompton Rangers fine 4-2 victory at high flying Saltash United in the South West Peninsula League, manager Peter Buckingham said, "We do well against the good sides and it was sweet revenge after their 99th minute equaliser at Speeds Meadow earlier in the season.”

Saltash had gone into the break with a 2-1 lead after Marc Thorne scored a brace with James Blake levelling in between. Rangers drew level through captain Brett Worbey and then goals from Alex Greening and Aaron Doble gave them the win.

Cully's reserves won handsomely, 8-1 against Exeter Civil Service Reserves.

Crediton United lost 4-1 at leaders Liverton in Division One East of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League.
