FOOTBALL: Tiverton Town take advantage of early gift
6:09pm Sunday 15th January 2012
Taunton Town 0, Tiverton Town 2
A SEASON'S best attendance of 387 will be of little consolation to Taunton after they succumbed to old rivals Tiverton in a disappointing match on Friday night, writes James Wright.
The Yellows avenged an early season reverse with a comprehensive victory that was never in doubt after they were gifted an opening goal within the first 40 seconds.
Tiverton stunned their hosts when George Painter deflected a deep David Steele free-kick past his own keeper, former Yellows legend Paul Edwards.
Paul West's side were clearly shaken, and did not muster their first attack until the 20th minute when Raith Plant sent a dipping effort just wide.
Their attacking cause was further hampered when Peter Knox, visibly struggling with a hamstring injury, had to be replaced by youngster Luke Redrup.
The visitors were even more dominant at the start of the second half. Andy Taylor fired a shot just wide before Steele latched on to a rebound to double the advantage in front of his side's numerous and jubilant supporters at the Fire Station end.
Taunton did not have a chance worth mentioning until the ball fell to Simon Ingram with six minutes remaining.
But the midfielder blasted wastefully over to sum up a woeful evening for his club.
Tiverton almost increased their winning margin in the final minute when Josh Searle shot just wide.
