Silverton police granted additional powers

5:10pm Tuesday 21st February 2012

POLICE covering the village of Silverton have been granted additional powers to help them fight anti-social behaviour.

A dispersal zone will be set up in the area under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003, meaning anyone in a group of two or more who is causing, or likely to cause, anti-social behaviour can be asked to leave the area, or to disperse into smaller groups.

Over recent weeks police have received an increase in reports from residents about groups causing problems in the village, including throwing things at properties, criminal damage and intimidating residents.

The dispersal zone will come into effect this Friday (February 17) and will last for six months if required. Posters and maps of the dispersal zone will be displayed throughout the identified zone area so that everyone is aware of which area is covered.

Julia Ryder, Community Safety Officer, said: “There are a small number of individuals who are responsible for causing the anti-social behaviour, or encouraging others to get involved.

“This power will enable the police to disperse those intent on causing a problem and if they breach an order to disperse, it will result in arrest.

“These powers will not affect anyone wishing to meet and go about normal day to day activities. They will only be used to deal with inappropriate behaviour. “I encourage residents in Silverton who witness any anti-social behaviour or crime to report it to the police as it happens on the non-emergency number 101, and if perpetrators are still at the scene then dial 999. They can then attend and deal with the issues.”

Dispersal zones have been used successfully in other areas of Mid Devon including Cullompton, Tiverton and Uffculme.

Other actions being adopted include the issuing warning letters and acceptable behaviour contracts.
