Jail for non-payment of council tax
5:00pm Thursday 2nd September 2010
A MID Devon resident was sent to prison for 17 days for non-payment of council tax last week.
The resident had defaulted on three previous occasions so the Magistrates found there to be ‘culpable neglect’.
The council’s Revenues Manager, John Chumbley, said: “Putting defaulters in prison is the last resort, however if council tax payers continually ignore their responsibilities, they will eventually pay the price.
“If anyone is experiencing difficulties in relation to payment of their council tax and needs help, please contact us on 01884-234329 – we are here to help.”
